Poway’s Lightning Brewery outshines some large well-known competitors in the Porter and Pilsner categories at the 2007 San Diego County Fair Craft Brewers Competition.

San Diego, CA - June 2007 Lightning Brewery, San Diego County’s newest craft brewery edged out some well-known and much larger competition at this year’s San Diego County Fair Craft Brewers Competition. Lightning Brewery took home the gold ribbon for it’s Black Lightning Porter, surpassing the Firestone Walker Brewing Co. of Sonoma County. Lightning also took home the silver ribbon for Elemental Pilsner, the gold ribbon went to Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. and the bronze went to Boston Beer Co., for Sam Adams Boston Lager.

Lightning Brewery is a dream come true for brewery founder and head brewer Jim Crute. Jim, who resides in the Scripps Ranch area of San Diego, holds a Ph.D. in Biochemistry. He attributes the fast growing respect and recognition that Lightning is gaining in the local brewing and beer drinking community as the result of the brewery’s ideology. Crute says, At Lightning, we are focused on being a high-end brewery that does not follow-on the great beers made by other breweries in San Diego County, rather, we pride ourselves on extending the spectrum of great beers made here. We specialize in fine European styles and lager beers. Also, in our beer making is the adage of “Better Beer Through Science,” we strive to make truly great beers in ways that are both robust and reproducible.

Jim describes Black Lightning Porter as a Baltic Porter that’s big on malt and big on hops. It’s a winter black ale with an ABV of 8.5%. The recipe contains nine different malts, and the methods of brewing and fermentation bring out strong chocolate and coffee undertones. It has exceptional smoothness and complexity for its style. Lightning’s Elemental Pilsner is one of the only truly crafted German Pilsner’s commercially made in the Southwest US. It’s one of the quartet of Lightning German-style beers that would qualify as “bier” in Germany, a rare feat for American beers. Lightning uses only imported premium “Pilsnermalt,” classic hops, water, and a selected strain of pilsner lager yeast.

If you would like to try some of Lightning’s award winning brews, the brewery is open for complimentary tastings on Friday’s from 1:30pm to 5:30pm and on Saturdays from 1:00pm to 5:00pm. Lightning will be holding a celebration open to the public upon the completion of their first year in business on Saturday, July 21st. LIGHTNING BREWERY ANNOUNCES FIRST YEAR CELEBRATION
Poway’s award winning Lightning Brewery will hold a celebration open to the public on Saturday July 21st from 12:00 noon to 4:00 pm! The proceeds will be donated to three different charities.

North San Diego County, CA - July 2007 Lightning Brewery, San Diego County’s newest craft brewery is recognizing the completion of the first year of business with a party that is open to the public.

The Lightning Brewery is a dream come true for founder and head brewer Jim Crute. Jim, who resides in the Scripps Ranch area of San Diego, holds a Ph.D. in Biochemistry. He attributes the fast growing recognition that Lightning is gaining, to the brewery’s ideology. Crute says, “At Lightning, we are focused on being a high-end brewery that does not follow-on the beers currently being made by other breweries in San Diego County. We pride ourselves on extending the spectrum of great beers made locally.” “We are known for specializing in European ales and lager beers. At the celebration Lightning will feature all of the Fine Hand Crafted Beer styles made at the brewery to date. These, include the brewery’s core line-up of Lightning Kölsch Style Ale, Thunderweizen Ale, award winning - Elemental Pilsner, and American Amber Ale. Super-premium seasonal beers will also be available for tasting. These include the Brewery’s gold medal winning - Black Lightning Porter, Fulminator Lager, Ionizer Lager, and the latest from the brewery, Old Tempest Ale - a strong ale made in the tradition of UK brewers.

The First Year Celebration will include entertainment, a raffle for brewery merchandise, and “Classic American Barbecue” by Ivan Krusic’s Smoking Hole BBQ. Tickets will be $20.00 for ten 4oz tasters, and a commemorative Lightning Brewery tasting glass. The proceeds of the celebration will be equally divided between planting trees in Poway, cancer prevention research, and college scholarships for children of deceased veterans. Attendance will be limited.
